Scholarship for the year 2005
The scholarship of EUR 10,000 for the year 2005 was donated by J. P. Haeusgen (deceased) and went to Dr Frank Martin, associate professor and Head of the Stained-Glass Section in the "Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi" at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. He used his three-month stay at the KHI to research the glass painting of Duccio (first document attesting to his existence dates from 1278, he is known to have died in 1318) in Siena Cathedral – a subject matter which thanks to recent restoration has become highly newsworthy and aroused enormous public interest. Due to the sensitivity of the material, mediaeval glass painting is one of the most threatened of artistic genres, yet it offers copybook examples of an exceptionally high technological standard.

At the Friends’ annual general meeting on 21 October 2006 in Munich, assistant professor Dr Martin presented his research findings. The title of his paper was “Durchlicht und Durchsicht. Duccios Rundfenster im Sieneser Dom” (Translucency and Transparency. Duccio’s round window in Siena Cathedral).
